Psalm 4:3-4 But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him. Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
Being still...something rarely taught in the modern church. In this day and age where churches are noisy, homes are noisy, cars are filled with music blasting, is it any wonder that most Christians cannot hear from God. Most are too busy, too burdened and have no real alone time with the Lord. They are surfing the internet, watching TV, listening to the radio...yet God calls each of us away from the noise into a quiet fellowship with Him. Every one of us goes through trials and adversity in our Christian walk, at times, and yet we become stronger in the Faith and stronger as we journey through those valleys. Whatever your circumstance may be...whether you are on a mountain top or in the valley, know that the Lord calls us into sweet fellowship with Himself. We are to wait upon the Lord-- meaning we are to look to Him, trust in Him, hope in Him, and be still and KNOW that He is God. He is always in control and everything He allows is for our greater good.
You may be going through a hard trial today but be encouraged-- God does not change. He is ever the same. What He did for you yesterday, He will do today. The strength He gave you yesterday is yours today, if you would but pray to Him, trust Him and rest in Him. Confess your sins to Him-- He is merciful and will forgive. Oh, you may say, "God is far from me." No, He is ever near. Many times Christians allow the clouds of circumstance to block their view of the Son. Yet we are not to look at our circumstances but unto Jesus-- the Author and Finisher of our Faith. Yet many times, the heart is far from Him. Dr. N. A. Woychuk wrote a book called, "'Building Gold, Silver and Precious Stones." In his book, he illustrates this fact. The following is based upon the section of the book called, "Hidden Manna" on page 86:
A man is looking down into a well in the night time. The moon in the sky is shining with full, silvery brightness, and the man is gazing upon its perfect reflection down in a deep, still-watered well. The man remarks to his friend who is passing by, "How beautifully still and round the moon is tonight!" Just then the friend drops a pebble into the well, which causes him to exclaim, "Oh no! The moon is all broken to shivers, and the fragments are shaking together in awful disorder." The friend says to him, "What are you talking about? Look up and see-- The moon has not changed one jot or tittle; it is the condition of the well, (which reflects the moon) that has changed."
Your heart is the well. Where there are no disturbing elements allowed therein, the Holy Spirit takes the preciousness of Christ and reveals it to you for your comfort and peace. But the moment a wrong motive is cherished in the heart, the well is seriously disturbed, and your glorious experiences are smashed to pieces, and you are restless and disturbed within.
But look up! "He abideth faithful! He cannot deny Himself!" Be still before God, confess that sin, and instantly there will be restored once more the calm sweet joy of communion.
"My soul wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved." (Psalm 62:5,6) We must rouse our souls to contemplation of God-- "my soul! Wait thou only upon God!" Linger before God in composure, in tranquility, in chastened silence. God's people are to be a quiet people, dwelling in the heights of purity, and softness, and therein remain utterly unruffled. As the smooth surface of the well best reflected the beauty of the moon, so in the believer the reflection of Christ is clearest where the life is most calm.
Do not feel that you have to entertain God. Just be silent unto God. Rest in the Lord. Repose with confidence upon His bosom, and the peace of God which passeth all understanding shall overflow your tired soul. You shall then exclaim, "My expectation is from Him!"
The word "wait" implies the thoughts of taking time with God, delighting to be with Him, and profiting by such familiar contact, even to the extent of conforming to His likeness. Psalm 37:4 says: "Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart." Is there with you a lack of material or physical things-- food, clothing, shelter, health? Delight thyself in the Lord! "...my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. "(Phil 4:19) He shall fill your cup to overflowing. He shall prepare a table before you full of good things. He shall lead you beside still waters and satisfy you in green pastures, and you shall "not want". Do you feel depressed with disappointment and peculiar heaviness of heart? "Delight thyself in the Lord!" He will cleanse the stuffed bosom of that perilous stuff which weighs upon the heart. God will restore your soul and renew a right spirit within you.
1Thess 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
We must schedule a time each day to spend with God-- not only in prayer, but also in silence. It is important that if we say we love God, we should spend quality time with Him. One can't have a good relationship with another if they don't spend quality time with that person. So equally time spent communicating with the Lord is the key to a good relationship with Him.
2Chron 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Psalm 4:2 Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.
